Today is an exciting day for 2018 Futures, and first off we are delighted to offer one of the most sought-after wines of the entire vintage, Chateau Pichon Lalande. We could not have been more impressed with Pichon Lalande this year and we are certain it will be regarded in the same way as the legendary 1982 in the future. In short, this is a very special wine that you all have in your cellar!

Also out today is one of the candidates for wine of the vintage, the extraordinary Chateau Leoville Las Cases. This revered 2nd Growth is one of the oldest properties in the Medoc and it is without doubt the leading estate in St Julien. The vineyards are superbly sited on gravelly-clay soils with the largest plot being surrounded by a stone wall and stretching between the village of St Julien and their illustrious neighbor, Chateau Latour. The 2018 was absolutely spectacular when we tasted it from barrel...not only did we all agree that it was one of the wines of the vintage, but perhaps the best En Primeur example of Las cases we have encountered. This is unquestionably going to be regarded as one of the legends of Bordeaux in years to come, so secure your allocation now!

Another one of the vintage's undisputed stars out today is Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou. This superb St. Julien is one of the leading Super Seconds and in 2018 they absolutely nailed it!

In addition, a potential 100-pointer from Pessac Leognan came out, Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge, along with their 97-98 pt. Blanc, two top-scorers from Pomerol in La Violette and Le Gay, as well as a the recently re-named second wine of Pichon Lalande, Pichon Comtesse Reserve.

Our 2018 Bordeaux Report is available for reading on our Futures Landing Page which is being updated with new wines daily, and we'll be sending offers on the most compelling wines as they are released...stay tuned!

2018 Chateau Pichon Lalande (Pauillac)

GVWM Standout Mid-Range Wine

This has to be up there with one of the most seductive Comtesses on record with layers of alternating softness and concentration combined with a lot of 2016’s elegance and power. The nose on this stands out a mile, getting it right up on the podium before you even take a sip. Rich raspberries combine with peonies and curls of woodsmoke while the appellation’s signature slate, cedar, liquorice and tannic grip slowly builds up on the palate. I’ve tasted this several times with each conveying a juiciness and elegance that is quite different in style to many in Pauillac this year - it's a 98-100 for me, and I'm already looking forward to re-tasting it in bottle. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 60% new oak used. 13% press wine. 3.75pH, 88IPT – higher even than the 80IPT in 2016. - Jane Anson, Decanter

This one nails it in 2018...One of the high water marks of the vintage. - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator

2018 Chateau Leoville Las Cases (Saint Julien)
GVWM Wine of the Vintage

OMG. This shows amazing depth of fruit and density. Full-bodied and so layered with incredible fruit and power. Blackberries. Blueberries. Violets. Hints of dried flowers. Fantastic fruit and tannins, yet agile and energetic. The château says 2016 plus, plus. - James Suckling

Yet another triumph for this great estate...Simply breathtaking. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

2018 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou (Saint Julien)

The grand vin of this terrific estate, the 2018 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is based on 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that will spend 18 months in new barrels. It’s as classy as they come, boasting a deep purple/blue color as well as awesome notes of pure crème de cassis, smoke tobacco, crushed rock-like minerality, and violets. Haute couture at its finest, with full-bodied richness, building structure and tannins, and remarkable purity, it’s certainly in the same ballpark as the magical 2016. It will be approachable in just 4-5 years yet keep for 40+. - Jeb Dunnuck

This is so layered and beautiful with incredible tannin quality. Full-bodied with a caressing texture that reminds me of the finest cashmere. So layered. You want to swallow this. Brings a smile to the face. Wow. So well crafted. - James Suckling

2018 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge (Pessac Leognan)

Checking in as 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot brought up in 60% new French oak, the 2018 Château Smith Haut Lafitte reveals a saturated purple color as well as rock star notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, graphite, crushed rocks, and spice. Deep, profoundly concentrated, beautifully seamless and textured on the palate, it reminds me of the 2009 with its opulent, powerful style. It's a brilliant wine from this terrific estate and up with the top wines in the vintage. Hats off to director Fabien Teitgen who continues to make an elegant yet powerful, uncompromising style of wine. -Jed Dunnuck
