To kick-start the new week we are delighted to see the release of a wine that always puts a smile on our face, the quite brilliant 2018 Chateau Leoville Poyferre. Located at the Northern end of Saint Julien, not far from the Pauillac border, Leoville Poyferre consistently produces one of the very best wines on the Left Bank. The 2018 really blew us away with its combination of intensity and elegance and had all the hallmarks of a vintage that will age perfectly. The 1990 Poyferre is one of the all-time great wines from Bordeaux and we believe this could potentially match or even eclipse that legendary year. There is only one way to find out - secure your allocation now!
Next up are two stunning St. Emilions, Clos Fourtet and Troplong Mondot. Both properties clearly excelled in the 2018 growing conditions and produced masterful wines, packed full of character and class. They have been universally praised by the critics and they are definitely up there with the creme de la creme of St. Emilion in 2018. Available at a fraction of the price of Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie, these are wines to tuck away in the cellar and enjoy over the coming decades.
Also released today is the ever-popular and "incredibly sexy" Margaux, Chateau D'Issan, with other notable releases listed below.
Our 2018 Bordeaux Report is available for reading on our Futures Landing Page which is being updated with new wines daily, and we'll be sending offers on the most compelling wines as they are released...stay tuned!
2018 Chateau Leoville Poyferre (Saint Julien)
GVWM Standout Mid-Range Wine
One of the gems in the vintage will be the 2018 Château Léoville Poyferré, which is a powerful, incredibly sexy wine based on 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, representing just 45% of the total production. In the same ballpark as the 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010, its deep purple color is followed by a rich, opulent bouquet of sweet black and blue fruits, tobacco, and graphite. Both intellectually and hedonistically satisfying, it fills the mouth with fruit, has remarkable purity and precision for such a powerful wine, sweet tannins, and a finish that goes on for nearly a minute. It's similar in character to the 2009 and will keep for three decades or more. This wine checks in at 14.4% alcohol, with a pH of 3.7, and a massive (one of the highest in the vintage) IPT value of 90. Tasted twice. - Jeb Dunnuck

2018 Chateau Clos Fourtet (Saint Emilion)
Dark plum and boysenberry fruit is laced with tobacco and chalk notes, while the fleshy grip slowly builds through the finish. This is seriously long, and though the fruit is gorgeous, the minerality steals the show in the end. - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator
One of the wines of the vintage, the 2018 Clos Fourtet is positively stunning. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2018 Chateau Troplong Mondot (Saint Emilion)
The focus to this wine sets a new standard for Troplong Mondot with density and minerality that I have not encountered for decades. Lots of slate and white-pepper character. Tight and very dense. Full body. Balanced. Wild mineral character and freshness here. Precise. - James Suckling

2018 Chateau D'Issan (Margaux)
The cashmere texture of the tannins is wonderful in this. They are ripe and precise. Dense at the same time, giving a slow drive and a long finish. Full-bodied with dark and pretty fruit. Persistent finish. - James Suckling
A brilliant, incredibly sexy Margaux that’s already hard to resist, yet will keep for 2-3 decades. - Jeb Dunnuck
