Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Crus
Limited Burgundy Offer

Volnay from Domaine Lafarge is, without a doubt, the benchmark for the region. I have had the privilege of drinking Lafarge on a number of occasions, and for me, the wine is elegant, finessed but extremely terroir-driven, reflecting the characteristic red earth in the region. Sadly, Lafarge continues to be a scarcity since the word was out on this wine decades ago. These wines are extremely limited so get ‘em while they last.

(13.2% alcohol; two of the seven barrels were new): Medium red. Ineffable high-pitched perfume of crushed raspberry, red cherry and blood orange. Boasts compelling richness and depth of fruit, but a distinctly red quality in spite of its youthfully medicinal character. A wine of great sucrosité and early balance, this spectacular Volnay maintains its outstanding fullness and breadth through an almost endless finish. With its noble tannins, savory minerality and astonishing lightness of being, this is an essence of Pinot Noir. It would appear to possess the energy for a 30-year life span. One of the most spectacular young Volnays I've ever tasted. Stephen Tanzer – Vinous Media

Tasting note: Interestingly the expressive and cool nose combines aspects from both the Pitures and the Caillerets with both red and dark pinot fruit, floral, spice and tea nuances. Here too the refined middle weight flavors brim with minerality and energy while displaying a caressing and sophisticated mouth feel before delivering first-rate punch on the impeccably well-balanced finish. This is also impeccably well-balanced and one very classy Volnay 1er. Sweet Spot – Outstanding – Allen Meadows – Burghound

The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs has what you might describe as an "aristocratic" bouquet, one that is distant and almost aloof at first and yet warming to you in its presence, revealing superb mineralité and tension. The palate is medium-bodied with thickset, rather rigid tannin that lend this body and density, the fruit darker and perhaps more masculine than Lafarge's Volnay Pitures and Mitans. It delivers a very focused, rather grippy finish and wonderful persistence. This has long-term prospects and should be reserved for those with patience or children with a penchant for seriously good Volnay. Neal Martin – The Wine Advocate

2016 Domaine Lafarge Volnay Clos des Chenes 1er Cru

Interestingly this is aromatically similar to the Caillerets except that it's not as spicy and much earthier. There is excellent size, weight and intensity to the big-bodied and equally mineral-driven flavors that evidence plenty of both muscle and power while delivering superb length on the very firmly structured and youthfully austere finale. Like the Pitures, this is textbook. Don’t Miss – Outstanding – Allen Meadows – Burghound

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes, without doubt, has the most seductive bouquet from Domaine Lafarge: ample red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, suggestions of eucalyptus just underneath. It has wonderful delineation—crystalline. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, firm in the mouth with very good structure, a delicate sprinkling of cracked black pepper furthering the complexity on the long finish. What a cerebral Volnay and what a delicious mouthful of Volnay this is going to be. Neal Martin – The Wine Advocate

(24 hectoliters per hectare): Bright medium red. Captivating perfume of cherry, raspberry, minerals and flowers. Wonderfully generous yet light on its feet, conveying terrific sappy energy and aromatic lift to its red fruit and spice flavors. Quite tactile on the back end, which features firm but sweet tannins and superb spicy persistence. This wonderfully scented wine has the structure for a long life in bottle. 2008 Domaine Lafarge Volnay Clos des Chenes

This too serves up a remarkably layered if extremely reserved nose that displays plenty of earth and spice as well as very fresh and cool aromas of red and blue pinot, floral notes and an obvious mineral influence that continues onto the tautly muscular and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors that are long, serious and focused on the presently austere finish. It's interesting to compare the quality of the tannins between this and the Caillerets - here they are denser but less fine and as a consequence, this will need a few extra years of cellar time. Outstanding – Allen Meadows - Burghound

Good deep red. High-pitched aromas of black cherry, violet, licorice and crushed stone. Like liquid silk on entry, then concentrated, primary and penetrating in the mid-palate, with beautifully integrated acidity accentuating the wine's dark, medicinal aspect. At once broad and lively on the finish, with rich dark fruit flavors building slowly and staining the palate. I might have picked this blend as a Cote de Nuits wine. Stephen Tanzer – Vinous Media

The 2008 Volnay Clos des Chenes is a powerful, intense Burgundy. There is a weightless energy to the Clos des Chenes that I find hugely appealing. Beautifully delineated aromatics and fruit are nicely framed by the clean, saline finish. This is an impeccable wine from Lafarge. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. Antonio Galloni – The Wine Advocate

2009 Domaine Lafarge Volnay les Caillerets 1er Cru

93-96 VM / 94 BH

$199.99 (in stock) Buy Now

The 2009 Volnay Les Caillerets is a rather dark, imposing wine in this lineup. Here the aromatics are a touch subdued, but what impresses is the authoritative, masculine personality. There is more than enough sheer extract to balance the firm tannins on the incisive finish. This looks to be one of the wines that will require the most patience. Anticipated maturity: 2021-2039. Antonio Galloni – Vinous Media

Tasting note: This offers another dimension in aromatic breadth and depth with a kaleidoscopic range of aromas that are like fireworks in a glass. The rich, full-bodied and tautly muscular flavors brim with both dry extract and an almost pungent minerality that adds lift to the already energetic and palate staining finish. A classic Caillerets that should reward long-term aging. Allen Meadows – Burghound - Outstanding
