YESTERDAY: April 24

Friday saw the market open slightly higher with the SPX hitting 2818 before falling to the 2,800 line it has had trouble with for a week. For the first three hours of the day, the SPX gyrated around the 2800 line trying to determine if it was support or resistance.

Recall that the previous day (Thursday) saw the SPX open at 2845 before falling and closing just under 2,800. This number has been a challenge along the lines of Sisyphus. The market would be pushed up hill by buyers who have been watching the Coronavirus situation slowly improve, only to roll back down hill to 2799. This was the 3rd day in a row where we attempted to close above 2,800, and finally did.

We are now entering the fun part of EARNINGS SEASON as the banking stocks are almost done. These are much funner names, many of which are Coronavirus plays.

TODAY: April 27

Now is the hardest part of this virus trading – maybe. We have got past the first half of the virus move and are entering the second half.

SHORT – MEDIUM – LONG TERM

I see some problems at 2870-ish. If we get past that, 2900 is the next obvious level of resistance. I still maintain my original view on the market I made at Day 1 (seen below).

S&P 500 Price Limits

From 8:30 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. CST, there are successive price limits corresponding to 7%, 13%, and 20% declines below the previous trading day’s reference price.

From 2:25 p.m. until the 3:00 p.m. CST close of the cash equity market, only the 20% price limit will be applicable.
