Top-Rated 2013 Barolo

"Sublime Finesse & Elegance"

The 2013 lineup from Barolo rivals the high-quality showing that we were last given in 2010. Many of these highly sought-after wines offer immediate drinkability and have tantalizing aromas, lively fruit and a purity and freshness that make them enjoyable now, but will most certainly amply reward those with the patience, and the willpower, to cellar them for a few years.

Bruce Sanderson at Wine Spectator states “…the current crop of Barolos, from the 2013 vintage, is the best since the stellar and age-worthy 2010s. They show more purity, perfume and elegance than their predecessors, with a bit less structure and a higher tone, more like violins than cellos.” Another factor to consider is that the 2014 vintage has shown to be inconsistent in quality as well as low on quantities due to weather challenges during the growing season. “Three hailstorms, heavy and insistent rain, and a cool, gray summer gave growers fits. Many 2014s are diluted and lacking depth, while a number of wines weren’t bottled at all” observed Antonio Galloni in his Vinous report on 2014 Barolo.

98 JS: Beautiful dark fruits of crushed raspberries and blueberries plus hints of champignon mushrooms and black truffles. Lavender undertones. Full and chewy with lots of tannins. Old vines give this a mossy, bark-like undertone. Needs five to six years to come around. - James Suckling

Bruno Giacosa Barolo le Rocche (White Label) 2013 (750 mL) - $169.99/ea.

97 JS: This is incredibly powerful and structured with so much tannin backbone and ripe fruit. Aromas of plums and hazelnuts. Full-bodied and chewy. Fabulous finish. Needs three to four years to come together. Great wine. No Falleto was made in 2013. Only Le Rocche. - James Suckling

Ceretto Barolo Brunate 2013 (750 mL) - $109.99/ea.
96 VM / 95 JS / 94 WA

11% below market average!

96 VM: Like the Prapò, the Barolo Brunate is much less expressive than it was immediately after bottling. Gracious and super-classic in feel, the Brunate has a lot to offer. In the glass, the wine is delicate and sensual. Even so, its best days are far off into the future. The Brunate is the least expressive of Ceretto's 2013 Barolos today. Then again, that is Brunate. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Ceretto Barolo Prapò 2013 (750 mL) - $109.99/ea.
95 VM / 95 JS / 94 WA

9% below market average!

95 VM: The 2013 Barolo Prapò shows quite a bit more Serralunga muscle and power than it did when I last tasted it. The tension between the wine's elegance and its more natural leanings towards power is utterly compelling. Orange zest, cinnamon, dried flowers, iron and smoke infuse the deep, resonant finish. Not surprisingly, the 2013 appears headed into a period of dormancy. I wouldn't touch a bottle anytime soon. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Santo Stefano 2013 (750 mL) - $109.99/ea.
94 WS

8% below market average!

94 WS: There’s a lot going on in this red, from the floral, licorice, cherry and earth aromas and flavors to the lightly chewy texture and long, mineral-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2021 through 2035. - Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator

Renato Ratti Barolo Rocche Annunziate 2013 (750 mL) - $80.99/ea.
95 WA / 94 JS / 94 WS
In Stock                                                            BUY NOW

15% below market average!

95 WA: The Barolo Marcenasco is aged in large casks, whereas the 2013 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata sees a mix of smaller wood and barrique instead for a more robust and opulent style. This approach works very nicely across from the hearty intensity and austerity displayed by the Rocche dell'Annunziata fruit. This wine is beautifully redolent of dark cherry and spice with lingering notes of balsam and medical herb that add focus to the wine's already fragrant bouquet. This vintage will require patience. The wine is hard-headed and stubborn now. It needs time to relax with age. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Vietti Barolo Castiglione 2013 (750 mL) - $39.79/ea
93+ VM / 93+ WA / 93 JS
In Stock                                                            BUY NOW

Lowest price online in the country – 24% below market average!

93+ VM: The 2013 Barolo Castiglione is rich, powerful and intense, especially for what is the estate's entry-level Barolo. Dark cherry, plum, spice, new leather and menthol are all used together. Intense and voluptuous, the Castiglione shows the richer, more intense side of the vintage. Time in the glass helps release the aromatics and the brighter side of Nebbiolo. Quite simply, the 2013 is a super Barolo Castiglione that is starting to close the qualitative gap with the single vineyard Barolos. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
